Makeup Suggestions for Beach Brides, PART 2: Keeping it Natural

February 22nd, 2015

In an outdoor setting like the beach, it is best to keep makeup application as simple and natural as possible. Very dramatic makeup has a tendency to look a bit out of place on the strand. For example, darker and more heavily pigmented eyeliners and eye shadows may appear much too harsh on certain individuals in natural lighting.  When it comes to enhancing the eyes with eyeliner and shadow, carefully choose colors that are best for your skin tone and consider trading in darker hues for less intense shades.  For example, in lieu of jet black eyeliner, perhaps try navy, charcoal, or plum instead.  For natural looking eye shadow, there are a number of exceptional natural or  “nude” collections on the market but none are probably as revered or reviewed as the Naked Palettes by Urban Decay (there are now 3 different palettes to choose from).  That said, at $54 for an individual palette, some find this price far too steep even if it is worth all the hype.  The good news is that there are some notably good “dupes” that can accomplish the same look at a fraction of the cost.  Here are a few worth trying:  1) NYX Nude on Nude palette ($25), 2) Coastal Scents Revealed 2 Palette ($19.95), and 3) The Balm’s “NUDE ‘tude” Palette ($25).

When selecting a blush and/or bronzer to contour, there are several considerations to keep in mind:  1) A cardinal rule of creating a natural looking contouring is to go no more than 2 shades darker than your natural skin color to minimize the chance of having visible lines on the face.  2) Blend, blend, and blend again! When contouring, you can use either a brush or sponge to blend, your choice.  Whether you prefer a sponge or a brush, do use quality tools as they make a world of difference in the final look and finish of your makeup.  Professional makeup artists tend to prefer either MAC or SIGMA brushes but they can end up being a bigger investment than the actual makeup they will apply.  If you have a limited budget, I have found that the brushes offered by Coastal Scents are very affordable and do a nice job.  If you prefer blending with a sponge, I cannot say enough about the Beauty Blender. This amazing little sponge is in my top 5 list of indispensable makeup tools. Though a little pricey at around $20 a piece, this perfect pink sponge has been worth every penny.

Another suggestion to keep makeup looking natural and fresh for your beach wedding is what I call “magnification management.”  Everything at the beach is bright, it sparkles, and light reflects and bounces off seemingly every surface.  For this reason, it is recommended that you minimize makeup that has lots of shimmer which will reflect light and not produce the best photos.  A final recommendation is to forgo lip gloss on the beach.  I know almost every woman cannot resist the shine of their favorite lip gloss (whether in place of lipstick or on top of). However, please keep in mind, if you have even a single stray hair that can be moved by the wind, it will find itself glued to your lips on the beach with the gloss performing similarly to Elmer’s school glue. Finally, it is always recommended to conduct at least one or two makeup trials before the big day.  It is also a good idea to photograph yourself with your “trial” wedding makeup either on the beach during the same time of day as your ceremony will be or in a similar outdoor setting with lots of natural light. This will ensure that you will be satisfied with the way your makeup appears in wedding photographs. A picture is truly worth a 1000 words.

Makeup Suggestions for Beach Brides, PART 1: Handling Humidity

February 14th, 2015

There are very few natural settings that are more picturesque than the beach.  Nothing quite compares to feeling the salty, warm breeze against your face and the silky sand between your toes.  Though this warm, salty setting is quite magical, it is, unfortunately, quite humid. Let’s discuss a few very important considerations for beach-bound brides when selecting makeup.

Brides will definitely want to consider wearing water resistant or waterproof makeup for beach weddings.  This is especially true for foundation. There are a number of great products on the market that hold up nicely even on the most humid summer day. Two top-selling brands that many professional makeup artists swear by include Make Up For Ever and MAC.  From the Make Up For Ever line, the Face and Body Liquid Makeup and the Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation are two great waterproof/resistant choices with the later offering more full coverage than the former.  From the MAC Studio line, the Face and Body Foundation is an incredible liquid foundation that has sheer to medium coverage and sets to a natural satin finish. An informative review can be found here. For those who need more opacity, MAC Full Coverage is another amazing product favored by many professionals. Makeup artist and YouTube sensation, Wayne Goss, does a wonderful demonstration of this product here.  Other notable foundations on the market include:  Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation, Clinique’s Stay-Matte Oil-Free Makeup, and Revlon’s ColorStay 24 Hour Foundation (which is a bargain at $10-$12).

Other important suggestions for keeping your makeup in place during humid conditions are to:  1) Avoid applying any moisturizer, serum, primer, or other topical under makeup that is not 100% oil-free as oil increases the chances of makeup not adhering well to the skin. 2) Minimize the number of layers of makeup or the relative “heaviness” of the application to reduce the chances of makeup “melting.”  3) Use a setting powder or sealing spray over makeup to provide maximum protection from the heat and humidity. For setting powder, Bare Minerals Mineral Veil and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish are both long-time favorites and are truly remarkable products.  That said, Ben Nye’s powders can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of department store brands.  Though Ben Nye products typically cannot be found at traditional makeup counters, you can buy this line from online retailers selling stage and production makeup.  Ben Nye’s products are becoming a household name due to Kim Kardashian’s open praise for Nye’s Banana Powder which she says she uses on a daily basis. When it comes to setting sprays, another indispensable Ben Nye product is his “Final Seal” setting spray is a miracle worker for setting makeup.  Yet another favorite setting spray on the market is Urban Decay’s “All Nighter” makeup setting spray.  It is at always at the top of the list on makeup review sites and beauty blogs.

Aside from choosing a good humidity resistant foundation and setting product, it is equally important to use waterproof eyeliner and mascara.  Eyeliners that seemingly never fail in extreme conditions include Stilla’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner and Urban Decay’s 24/7 Eyeliner pencil.  I have also had great success with L’Oréal’s Infallible 24 Hour Gel Lacquer Liner which is a remarkable product that can be found at any drugstore for less than $10.  When it comes to mascara, there are so many options available and there are just as many opinions as there are options.  Nevertheless, there are a few that have survived the hype and have been around for decades.  I will mention two that can be found across the world on both drugstore racks and in the toolkits of famous makeup artists. The first is L’Oreal’s Voluminous Volume Building Mascara (which happens to be the very favorite of famous makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic).  Another drugstore sensation with an almost cult-like following is Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara.  It has been a top seller since it was first introduced in 1971, has won more beauty awards than any other mascara and is the preferred mascara of several top makeup artists including Natasha Nichol, Virginia Holmes, and Kerry Malouf.  If you are fortunate to have already found the perfect mascara for but it is tragically not offered in a waterproof option, you can still successfully use it by applying a clear mascara sealant as a final coat. There are several on the market including:  Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat by Anastasia Beverly Hills ($21 at Sephora) or e.l.f. Studio’s Waterproof Mascara Top Coat ($3 on e.l.f. website).

A final suggestion is that when choosing eye shadow and blush, keep in mind that a cream or gel is going to have far more staying power than a powder.  If you are going to use a powder eye shadow consider first applying an eyelid primer to your lids.  Though Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion is now legendary, you can accomplish the same goal with products that are under $10 (e.g., e.l.f. Essential Eyelid primer and NYX Eye Shadow Base).  Best of luck to every beach-bound bride reading this blog.  I, along with all the staff of Oceanfront Weddings of NC and The Isles Restaurant & Tiki Bar, wish you a lifetime of love and the very best of everything!

Beach Wedding Cake Ideas from Our Ocean Isle Beach Wedding Planners

August 30th, 2011

Beach Wedding Cake IdeasIf you’re preparing for your North Carolina beach wedding, you can’t forget about the cake! And while there are many options these days, from the traditional tiered cake to cupcakes to “cake pops”, our Ocean Isle Beach wedding planners want you to be aware of your options so you find the perfect fit for your wedding.

You might have already read out previous blog post on beach wedding cake toppers, and we hope that was some help in deciding what kind of cake you want. Cupcakes are also a fun alternative, and you can opt for various sizes and decorative options, such as seashells on each cupcake. Still want to “cut the cake” with your husband? We recommend having a small one or two-tiered cake and supplement the rest of your servings with cupcakes! Cake pops are also growing in popularity, and can be served on lollipop or pretzel sticks.

Find out from your vendor the decorative options available, as many of them have stands or ideas you may be interested in for your own wedding.
